June 29th

San Juxto to Abadin

Stages  27 - 28

 June 29

Another day of hiding from the rain.  Continually reading the wind and the cloud movement to see how we could let storms pass us and have minimal showers on us.

Right about lunch time we reached Mondoñedo, it had been raining, but just  as we reached the Cathedral in the town center the sun came out and we walked the market before walking into the cathedral, but once back outside it was raining so we walked over to the top of the square to get lunch and just then the sun came out, it felt so good to take off our shoes and dry out our clothe in the sun as we had pizza and a couple of Amstel Limon beers, the French lady whom we met the day before ended up sitting with us and we shared our lunch and bought her a drink, several other Bicigrinos stopped near us to have lunch, but they were more like bikepackers rushing thru the Camino. We took several photos of the Cathedral and just enjoyed the sun and relaxing.

After lunch it was tough to get going as we climbed an elevation from 40 m to 485 m above sea level.  Plenty of natural scenery and beauty.  We stopped off after about 45 minutes about half way from Mondoñedo to Abadin by the mountain to throw our wet clothes over our panniers so that they would dry when a woman invited us to what we thought was her house but it was an albergue where a woman painter by the name of Carmen hosted pilgrims in an attic space she had created with 6 beds.
We went down and visited with her for almost an hour, talked about painting, she was working on a book on the pre-historic cave painting in that part of Spain as well as the paintings in French caves. She had a very beautiful place that would have been fantastic to be a host to get away to either write or in my case to paint. At the end she tried to talk us into staying.  While the place was very nice, it was too early to stop.

At about 5:30 we got to Abadin and checked into a very modern albergue for 15€ each, but it was well worth it.  There was a good coffee maker, fresh towels to shower and had our laundry done for a fee by the staff.  The shower had strong water and lots of liquid soap.  The host even let me wear his jacket so I could wash all my clothes. We went to the supermarket next door and bought goodies to make dinner.  Carmen made pasta with the sardines we bought while I went to the pharmacy to pick up some pain pills for the road. Today we rode mainly on the pilgrim trails and did our best to stay off the carreteras.

We got all of our devices charged up with the help of a Canadian pilgrim who had loaned us her charger since we had left yet another charger in an albergue, luckily we had bought the two extra battery packs to charge on the road.  Here again we had a room to ourselves.  The rain kept falling all night long but we now had all of our clothes clean and dry.
Early in the day, stopped to let the rain go by
In the town of  Mondoñedo, stopped for lunch
