Kampaia Albergue to Markina-Xemein

Friday 16th – Kampaia Albergue to Markina-Xemein

We took on two stages today….we had a 5
€ breakfast at the albergue of toast, orange juice and coffee.  We went on the pilgrims road which was up and down thru the mountains, even though it was a slow ride it had enjoyable views of the sea.  It was raining and had been raining all day yesterday so the ground was very slippery and we could not ride because it was too dangerous.

We got to a campground where Carmen went off on her own to the restroom, while I waited for her the same policeman  (now on duty in a car) from yesterday was there patrolling the park drove up to me and asked me if I remember him, I said I did but was a little lost were since we had asked the police other times for directions but it was the one from yesterday giving us advice , but yesterday he was cycling, he suggested we take the highway because the drop on the camino would be all slippery rocks, but Carmen was nervous on the road because there was no shoulder to ride on but in my opinion we were always given lots of space by the drivers, in fact cars slowed down for us in the dangerous areas.

We got to the town of Deba where we had lunch – me a burger and Carmen a salad.  Carmen also got a Hamburger – made of ham … that she did not eat, I would have eaten it but I was very full already.
While most walking pilgrims stopped in Deba we decided to ride another stage mostly on the road, again we made it after stopping to eat our snacks on the road.  Finally we reached Markina and got an albergue at the donativo we had bought a bottle of wine and had it with some cheese and bread we had saved from earlier purchases.

We sat at a small open space across our Albergue Lezama and ate while we watched people go by.  It was a quiet town.  In this albergue for the first time they had a clothe spin dryer  that you put your wet clean laundry in and it rotates at a high speed to get all the water out, which made it a faster dry to be ready for the next day.
