June 15

San Sebastian to the
Kanpaia Aterpea albergue

June 15

In San Sebastian we had breakfast just around the corner from Hotel, It was nice to have a calm breakfast and talk about what needed to be done that day.  We changed money at a Santander bank and then went to get Carmen a new charger for her phone and a new bike helmet (Bearkat colors) from a very nice bike shop, I now had her old helmet to wear.

A light rain all morning made for a  hard climb over the forest for over 3 hours at a very slow pace.  The ground was muddy, rocks were slick and what normally would be OK to ride was too slick to ride safely, we actually had to push uphills or control our bikes walking downhills.  Halfway thru the ride we stopped and had a morning snack of fruit we had picked up earlier. We are getting good at planning our snacks by picking up items at the markets or from the albergues.

The afternoon turned out to be longer than what we wanted, in Orio where most walking pilgrims were stopping for the night we decided we still had a few kilometers left in us, so on to Zarautz which was within distance and still have an early rest.

But after arriving we found that the Zarautz Albergue did not open up until July, so back on the road on to the next albergue. While riding we met a police officer who told us to keep going to the Albergue in
Getaria, he told us that he had done the Camino and knew the road well.
We kept going and had a beautiful ride along the coast to our Albergue. When we reached the town we were told the last few hundred meters to the albergue would be a very difficult uphill road.  So we decided to eat an ice-cream before we tackled the hill full of rocks and cobblestones.  Carmen made the climb by her self, pushing the bike just as I did.

Now at the albergue we showered and our dinner was cheese and fruit jelly from the French market and Bread we had just bought at the ice cream shop.  Carmen said she was happy and felt good for such a long day.  Each day has a different challenge and Carmen takes each as a well deserved accomplishment. She is getting stronger as each day passes and gaining confidence in her riding and stamina.

     The
Kanpaia Aterpea albergue was a little quiet which is the norm for the Northern Camino just a couple of other pilgrims, one a walker and the other a cyclist doing a larger European tour. We tried going into town for dinner but it was over 2k away against a very strong wind as well as uphill, so we came back and ate our leftovers.
