In the Pyrenees to Irun

Riding north through the Pyrenees Valley

Wednesday June 14th

We traveled from our hotel all the way to San Sebastian, we rode about 80 kilometers but mostly downhill.  We didn’t leave until 8:00 am, it was nice to sleep in since we were at a hotel instead of an albergue where one is awaken by 6 am by all the pilgrims wanting to get an early start to beat the days heat.

We rode calmly and stopped at a town that was having an outdoor market time.  We walked around, had some strong coffee and ate some pastries, I wanted to go back for another chocolate croissant but had to control myself, Had it not been raining I would have loved to stay longer to enjoy the market atmosphere, but the weather looked like it was getting worse and we did not have our albergue for the night. We were low on  phone battery, meaning we did not have access to our map app, so we stopped for directions in Irun where we were told there was a bike path from Irun to San Sebastian without having to get on the road.

Days later we were told that in Irun the official starting point of the Norte they stamp your passport with a red wax stamp, we did not read into any of this info, so we lost our, we saw others later with it and it definitely is the stamp to start the camino with.
Carmen was tired, she broke down and cried she tells me that she does not think she can make it, later on she tells me that she doubts her decision to make the Camino, I tell her again that there is no doubt in my mind that she can make it. I know that she will grow stronger everyday day as she gains confidence with each day completed.
We kept on going and when we arrived at the Albergue in San Sebastian it was full.  We then searched for a couple of others but could not get a reply when we rang the bell at a hostel, (remember we were our of battery on our phones so we had to rely on our communication with others)  A guy that lived in the building which also housed the albergue let us in and then helped us find an Airbnb.  The guy had a girlfriend  who had a Pension  in town called Tu Hogar. He called his girlfriend and told her about us, she had space and the guy helping us walked us to the bar where she worked and she took us over to the airbnb.

The accommodations were very nice the room had a huge window that faced the Cantabrian Sea.  All of our clothes were wet from our ride so we were happy to have a place to shower and put our clothes out to dry on the window, floor and handing from our bike handlebar.  We went out to walk around the area but being so tired already we ate dinner at a Kebab restaurant just outside our Pension, eating these Kebabs reminded me of down the same with both Jessy and Gabby
This was our second day without stamps on our pilgrims passport,we didn’t even think to ask at a bar or church.
